Xiaomi launching new range of cheap 5G smartphones
Xiaomi promises that all 2020 phones over $285 will support 5G.
Xiaomi has always been one of the leading companies in the world when it comes to affordable smartphones. And it appears that it is planning on doing the same for 5G phones, offering even cheaper versions in 2020.
Currently, Xiaomi is offering the Mi Mix 3 5G and the Mi 9 Pro 5G. However, the company is planning on brining cheaper phones with 5G capabilities next year.
Affordable 5G smartphones
Xiaomi is aiming to bring even more affordable high quality 5G mobiles to the market which will fill the gap. Xiaomi’s CEO claims that the company will launch ten 5G phones in 2020 which leads to plenty affordable options.
Anything above $285 (£219) will reportedly support 5G, which is quite an impressive feat for the company. This low price point blows many 5G devices out of the water, with current costs ranging between $600-$2000. This is a huge price difference that could make 5G accessible to so many more consumers.
What phones could we see?
Next year will see the launch of the Mi 9’s successor, likely to be called the Xiaomi Mi 10, which should fit within this cheaper 5G price window. Furthermore, the upcoming Redmi K30 will also come with 5G (however, we have no idea about the price, so it could be one of the more costly options).
The Redmi Note series poses a bit of a question mark, too, as the Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi Note 8 Pro didn’t actually breach the $285 price barrier when it launched in China. So, if pricing doesn’t increase, it’s anybody’s guess whether these devices will be an option for those searching for affordable 5G.
However, with so many phones coming from Xiaomi next year, we will certainly see a rise of affordable 5G mobiles hitting the market, supporting the view that 2020 will be the year 5G tips into the mainstream.
